It's amazing to me how far Japanese manga and anime based culture has propagated throughout the world. My first dabblings* in the anime world began in high school Japanese class, where a group of us formed an anime club. (*note that I'm not taking into consideration Speedracer or Starblazers and the like, as they were dubbed into English).
Back in the early '90s, anime was sub-culture and pretty hard to come by, most everything was underground sans a few small companies producing subtitled works. At that time, we had access to VHS tapes of original Dragonball broadcasts direct from Japan. We watched what was available, and were also fortunate enough to have a Japanese bookstore that sold the tankobon.
From what I understand the Dragonball franchise was extremely popular across the globe, but what I find interesting is that English was probably the last major language the manga and anime were translated. The official US release didn't occur until almost 20 years after the original Japanese publication.
Surfing the net the other day lead me to the new trailer for Dragonball Evolution, scheduled for release in April, 2009. I've never been a big fan of live action adaptions from anime titles, and am scared seeing this will ruin Dragonball for me. I think Hollywood is scraping a bit too much for material... what's next Deathnote? No, no, I hear Akira is in the works.
In any case, will you be in line on opening day?
